Our efforts to increase focal points in western Kenya bear fruit

Our efforts to secure focal points for information activities in rural areas received a boost on 8 and 9 May 2009, when two Catholic Church Missions in Western Kenya made some premises available for our use. This followed a visit to the missions by RUDESAT International’s CEO, Joseph Mugah.

Acquisition of space at Ejinja Mission

On 8 May 2009, Dr. Mugah visited Ejinja Mission in Mumias Division in the company of Mr. Ashioya, the Headmaster of Itete Secondary School where RUDESAT International already has a focal point. The visit had been arranged by Mr. Ashioya whose school is within Ejinja Parish.

The meeting started with a brief presentation by Dr. Mugah on the mission and activities of the NGO, with highlights on its relevance to the communities around the church. Father Benedict Mulama (the Father-in-Charge of the Ejinja Parish) noted that the initiative would go a long way in assisting both the unemployed youth and the elderly alike. He expressed interest in working with the NGO, and guided his visitors on a brief tour of the mission premises to establish the kind of space he would offer as a focal point.

Most fortunately for RUDESAT International, Father Mulama identified eight rooms and a hall, and said they were all available for use by the NGO. He however suggested that the NGO arrange for its CEO or senior member of staff to address stakeholders of the Ejinja Parish, including sub-Parish officials, on the initiative.

Acquisition of space in Butunyi Parish, Burinda sub-Parish

On 9 May 2009, RUDESAT International’s CEO visited Burinda sub-Parish in Butula Division, Busia District, following earlier arrangements and on the invitation of the Father-in-Charge of Butunyi Parish, Father … Nakhero. The Country Co-Director for Western Kenya, Dr. Sebastian Okello, accompanied the CEO. The purpose of the visit was to address sub-Parish officials and other key stakeholders on the NGO’s activities and explain the relevance of the NGO on rural communities there.

A sizeable group turned up for the presentation which lasted about half an hour. At the end of the presentation, the audience was invited to ask questions and make any comments they had.

The general consensus was that the initiative was relevant to the needs of the rural folks in and around Burinda and would go a long way in complementing ongoing poverty-reduction efforts in the area.

The CEO promised to draft a Memorandum of Understanding that would guide collaboration between the NGO and members of the community, through Butunyi Parish and specifically Burinda sub-parish.
